Frequently Asked Questions About Solar in Gauteng
Everything you need to know about pricing, installation, performance, load shedding backup, maintenance and financing.
Pricing
Pricing depends on system size, battery capacity, and your roof layout, but as a guide, entry-level backup systems start from around R33,500 installed, mid-range hybrid systems typically run R59,000–R65,000, and larger whole-home systems sit around R100,000–R120,000. We provide a free, no-obligation site assessment so you get an accurate quote based on your actual home or business, not a generic estimate.
Yes — in fact, rising tariffs make solar more valuable over time, not less. Every annual increase widens the gap between what you’d pay Eskom and what your solar system is already saving you. Most of our customers see their system pay for itself within 4–7 years, after which they’re generating a large portion of their own power at a fraction of the ongoing cost.
We can discuss flexible payment structures and point you toward finance partners during your consultation, depending on your chosen package and provider options available at the time. Chat to our team on WhatsApp or request a quote, and we’ll walk you through what’s currently available.
Installation Process
Most residential installations take 1–2 days on-site once the system has been designed and materials are on hand, depending on system size and roof complexity. From your initial enquiry to a switched-on system, the full process — including site assessment, design, and municipal considerations where applicable — usually takes 1–3 weeks.
Our certified team arrives on the scheduled day, installs and wires your panels, inverter and battery, then tests and commissions the full system before we leave. We walk you through how everything works — what’s covered on backup, how to monitor performance, and who to call if you ever need support.
In most residential cases, backup and hybrid systems that don’t export power to the grid don’t require special council approval. Grid-tied systems that do export power may require additional sign-off depending on your municipality. We’ll advise you on what, if anything, applies to your specific installation during your free assessment.
Performance & Load Shedding
It depends on the system size you choose. Our Essential Backup packages cover key circuits like lights, Wi-Fi, and fridges. Our Home Hybrid and Whole-Home Power packages are designed to cover most or nearly all of your household’s circuits, including geysers, pool pumps, and aircons, through every stage of load shedding. We’ll help you choose the right level of coverage during your free consultation.
A backup-only system (like our Essential Backup package) uses a battery to keep key circuits running during outages, but draws its charge mainly from the grid. A full hybrid or whole-home solar system adds enough solar panels to generate meaningful daily power, which both backs you up during load shedding and lowers your monthly electricity bill year-round.
In most cases, yes. Many of our packages are designed to be expandable — we can size your inverter and wiring so that additional panels or batteries can be added later as your budget or needs grow, rather than starting from scratch.
Maintenance
Very little. Panels generally need an occasional clean (especially after Highveld dust storms or bird activity) and a visual inspection once or twice a year. Batteries and inverters benefit from periodic performance checks, which is why we offer optional monitoring and maintenance plans to catch small issues before they affect your system’s performance.
Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries — used in our Home Hybrid and Whole-Home packages — typically last 8 to 15 years depending on usage and depth of discharge. Lead-acid batteries, used in some entry-level backup setups, typically last 3 to 5 years. We help you choose the right battery type for your budget and expected lifespan during your free assessment.
